If You Are in Crisis Right Now.
This page is here to get you help faster than we can. Use it first.
If Someone Is in Immediate Danger
Call 911 if someone has taken an overdose, has seriously injured themselves, is unconscious, or is threatening to harm themselves or another person and you believe they will act on it.
Crisis Lines
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
Free, confidential, and answered 24 hours a day. You do not have to be suicidal to call. It is also for panic, for overwhelming distress, and for parents who are frightened for their child and do not know what to do next. In Utah, 988 is the number the county services themselves point people to.
Crisis Text Line
A text conversation with a trained crisis counselor, for when speaking out loud is not possible. Useful for teenagers who will text but will not pick up a phone.
SafeUT
SafeUT app
A Utah service offering confidential crisis chat and a tip line for students, parents and educators. It works through the SafeUT app on both app stores. There is no separate number to call.
When to Go to an Emergency Room Instead of Booking a Session
Therapy appointments are scheduled days or weeks ahead, and a first session is not an emergency service. Go to an emergency room, or call 911, rather than waiting for an appointment if any of the following is true right now:
- There is a plan and the means to act on a plan to end their life.
- Someone has already harmed themselves and needs medical care.
- Someone has taken an overdose, or has been drinking or using in a way that makes them unsafe.
- Someone is not oriented to reality, is hearing or seeing things others do not, and cannot be kept safe at home.
- You cannot keep the person, or yourself, safe until an appointment.
Going to an emergency room does not mean the situation has failed. It means it needs a level of care that an outpatient office cannot provide today.
If It Is Not an Emergency but It Is Not Fine Either
Call 988 anyway. It is not only for emergencies, and the person who answers can help you work out what kind of help is needed. You can also call our office at (385) 224-5128 during office hours, though we are not a crisis service and cannot respond outside them.
