Desiree Beddes, AMFT
Therapist

- Self-harm and emotion regulation
- Adolescents with oppositional and behavioral challenges
Before my master's program, I was close to a family navigating a teenager making unsafe choices, and I saw how therapy gave each of them a voice. That is what inspired me to help other adolescents and families. Below, I have answered a few questions so you can get to know me.
Meet Desiree
A short introduction from Desiree is being filmed.
Why I Became a Therapist
I became a therapist because I've seen firsthand the hope, healing, and lasting change that therapy can bring to people during some of their most difficult moments. I truly believe everyone deserves to be met with empathy, support, and the opportunity to improve their mental health and overall well-being. One of the experiences that strengthened my passion for this work happened before I began my master's program. I was close to a family as they navigated the challenges of their teenager making unsafe choices. Witnessing their struggles firsthand deepened my empathy for both adolescents and their parents. I also had the privilege of seeing how therapy transformed their lives by giving each family member a voice, improving communication, teaching healthy coping and self-care skills, and helping them build a stronger, healthier future together. Seeing that lasting impact inspired me to become a therapist and help other adolescents and families find the same hope, healing, and support.
What I Bring to This Work
I completed both my graduate internship and continued my clinical work at a short-term residential treatment center, where I worked with individuals and their families during times of crisis and transition. This experience gave me a strong foundation in helping clients stabilize, navigate difficult emotions, and develop practical tools for moving forward. Working in an intensive treatment setting taught me the importance of meeting clients where they are, collaborating with families when appropriate, and creating individualized treatment plans that support lasting growth. I bring that same compassionate, client-centered approach to my work today, helping each person build on their strengths and work toward meaningful change.
Who I Work Best With
I especially enjoy working with adolescents as they navigate the challenges of growing up, discovering who they are, and building the skills to support their mental health and well-being. As well as working with teens alongside their parents, helping families improve communication, strengthen relationships, and create a supportive home environment. I enjoy partnering with both teens and parents to help each family member feel heard, understood, and empowered.
What a Session With Me Looks Like
Clients can expect a collaborative, supportive environment where we work together to create meaningful goals and develop practical steps for achieving them both in and outside of sessions. We'll explore any obstacles that arise and identify strategies to help you move forward. Most importantly, you'll have a safe, nonjudgmental space to share your worries, frustrations, and fears, where you'll be met with empathy, understanding, and respect.
What I Think Creates Change
Meaningful change begins when clients feel genuinely cared for, seen, heard, and understood. From that foundation of trust and safety, they can begin to accept where they are, work through challenges, and move forward with confidence. My goal is to help clients grow into a version of themselves they feel proud of—one that reflects their values, strengths, and potential.
If You Are Not Sure About Starting
If they're hesitant to begin therapy, that's completely understandable. Therapy is a highly individualized process, there's no one-size-fits-all approach. The focus, timeline, and goals are all tailored to your unique needs and are developed together with your therapist. Everyone experiences challenges, transitions, or areas of life they'd like to improve. Therapy provides a supportive, nonjudgmental space to explore those experiences, gain insight, and work toward meaningful change at a pace that feels right for you.
Outside of Work
I am the youngest of six children, with thirteen nieces and nephews. I have graduated from Northwestern University. I love sports, especially football and baseball.
